Can AI be both trustworthy and sustainable?
In April our gAIn PI Prof. Dr. Gitta Kutyniok gave a keynote at the 18th Asian Conference on Intelligent Information and Database Systems (ACIIDS 2026) in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, entitled “Trustworthy and Sustainable AI: From Mathematical Foundations to Next Generation AI Computing.”
The lecture examined the two challenges that will decide the future of AI – trustworthiness and sustainability – from a foundational perspective. Rather than treating them as engineering problems to be patched, it traced their root causes to the limits of today’s digital computing architectures themselves: certain reliability guarantees simply cannot be achieved on conventional hardware, and the energy demands of current models are approaching what is sustainable.
The conclusion points directly to the gAIn agenda: if the obstacles are rooted in the hardware, the answer is to rethink hardware design and to embrace novel paradigms such as analog and neuromorphic computing – paving the way toward AI systems that are not only powerful, but also reliable and energy-efficient.
