On April 8th, we officially launched the project gAIn – Next Generation AI Computing in the historical Große Aula of the LMU!
This interdisciplinary research collaboration brings together leading minds of the LMU München, TU München, and TU Dresden to address one of Europe’s most pressing strategic challenges: building sovereign, energy-efficient, and reliable AI.
At its core, gAIn aims to design a rigorous, mathematics-based foundation for the next generation of GreenAI. Beyond theory, we are exploring next-generation computing platforms including neuromorphic computing, quantum systems, and biocomputing, rethinking how AI systems can be built both energy-efficient and responsible by design.
The scientific team is led by Prof. Dr. Gitta Kutyniok (LMU), Prof. Dr. Holger Boche (TUM), Prof. Dr. Stefanie Speidel and Prof. Dr. Frank Fitzek (TU Dresden), who bring together theoretical foundations with domain expertise in medical robotics and communications.
A special highlight of the evening was hearing from the two state ministers:
Markus Blume, Bavarian Minister of Science and the Arts, emphasized: “Bavaria and Saxony are expanding the horizon in AI research. Together, we are empowering our universities and TU Dresden to lead the way in technology for the future.”
Sebastian Gemkow, Saxon Minister of Science, Culture, and Tourism added: “This project will position both Saxony and Bavaria as global leaders in computing technologies, enhancing Germany’s technological sovereignty. We are proud to support this pioneering initiative.”
The opening ceremony also featured welcome remarks from vice presidents of all three universities, underlining the institutional commitment for gAIn. The impulse talk by Prof. Dr. Frank Fitzek and the project presentations by Prof. Dr. Gitta Kutyniok and Prof. Dr. Stefanie Speidel demonstrated the need for Green AI and its disruptive potential, particularly in the applications. A scientific talk on robotics by Prof. Dr. Wolfram Burgard (University of Technology Nuremberg) further illustrated how these ideas translate to application-driven research. The evening concluded with an exhibition featuring demonstrators from Green AI research and a lively reception.
With the generous funding of the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts and the Saxon State Ministry of Science, Culture and Tourism gAIn is set to shape the future of AI in Europe and beyond.
We are grateful to everyone who joined us for this exciting beginning. Thank you for your presence and support!
