Will robots replace surgeons?
Not at all – they will augment them. That was the message of our gAIn PI Prof. Dr. Stefanie Speidel in her keynote “Dr. Robot, please to the OR – Artificial Intelligence in the Operating Room of the Future” at the MINT-EC Zukunftsforum 2026 at TU Dresden.
Speaking to a packed lecture hall of students from Germany’s MINT-EC network of excellence schools – around 250 top-performing pupils and their teachers from across the country, gathered on the TU Dresden campus for two days of career orientation in STEM – she showed how AI and robotics are reshaping surgery: superhuman precision, real-time data, and intelligent assistance that supports rather than supplants the surgeon’s judgement. The Zukunftsforum, organized by TU Dresden together with the national school network MINT-EC e.V., was held in Dresden for the first time.
For gAIn, reaching the next generation of scientists and engineers is part of the mission. The future of surgery – and of the reliable, energy-efficient AI it will run on – takes shape at the intersection of AI, robotics, clinical practice and young talent.
