Indo-German Medical Partnership Workshop – InDeMed: AI, Extended Reality, and Robotics in Healthcare – Emerging Pathways from Diagnosis to Therapy

The Indo-German Workshop “InDeMed: Artificial Intelligence, Extended Reality, and Robotics in Healthcare – Emerging Pathways from Diagnosis to Therapy”, held from July 16–18, 2025 at Technische Universität Dresden (TUD), was conducted under the aegis of the Indo-German Science & Technology Centre (IGSTC) and jointly coordinated by the gAIn PI Prof. Dr. Stefanie Speidel (NCT TUD, Germany) and Prof. Dr. Anita Dhar (AIIMS, India).

The workshop brought together over 50 leading experts from India and Germany. Over the course of three days, the event featured 35 high-level talks and two engaging panel discussions on topics such as:

  • Present and future perspectives from India and Germany in Clinical AI for Diagnosis and Surgery
  • AI and Robotic Surgery
  • Virtual Reality

These sessions fostered deep interdisciplinary exchange between both countries.

In addition to the formal sessions, participants engaged in dynamic networking over coffee breaks, focused breakout discussions, and interactive demo presentations. They also visited the experimental operating theater and the medical imaging platform at NCT Dresden.

PhD students from Prof. Speidel’s research group showcased demonstrations of AI and robotics in surgery, including the gAIn demonstration of SurgMentor — a use case for AI-assisted surgical training and skill assessment.

One of the highlights of the event was the reception dinner at CeTIBAR, hosted by gAIn PI Prof. Frank Fitzek. It featured an impressive presentation and live demo on tactile human-machine communication, providing a memorable experience for all attendees.

These multifaceted interactions significantly deepened mutual understanding and sparked promising Indo-German collaborations in healthcare innovation — particularly in the fields of Artificial Intelligence, Extended Reality, and Robotics.

A major highlight of the workshop was the signing of a Letter of Intent (LoI) between Prof. Ursula M. Staudinger, Rector of TUD, and Dr. M. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS New Delhi. This marks the beginning of a strategic alliance between TUD and India’s premier medical institution, laying a strong foundation for sustained, bilateral cooperation in developing future-ready, technology-driven healthcare solutions.
